It was an idyllic way to spend the morning, especially our last one. It was three-quarters of the way through our Windstar Alaska Cruise when we finally awoke in the place we had most looked forward to… Sitka! If you talk to me at all about Alaska, I’ll quickly share that my favorite places are Denali and Sitka – I’ve been blessed to visit both many times, and usually with great weather. I’m becoming quite a fan of Wrangell and wanted to try something different this time.

They also have 2 ships committed to Greece so still lots of demand for those itineraries. Windstar supplies waterproof pants and gloves for the kayaking and zodiac expeditions. I have short fingers so I brought my own wool mitten-gloves and they worked well enough.
Land Vacations
Windstar's fleet, with a total of 1,242 passenger capacity, leads the market in small ship cruising, visiting popular ports and those off-the-beaten-track, in over 60 countries. This boutique cruise line accommodates fewer than 350 passengers on its small ships, offering cruises that diverge significantly from the ordinary. Windstar is known for immersive and authentic experiences, unique, port-intensive itineraries, exceptional award-winning service, and an innovative culinary program as the Official Cruise Line of the James Beard Foundation.

Cruise Tours
The ship’s open bridge policy makes it easy to visit the captain and learn about navigation. 212-passenger all-suite Star Legend is now sailing in Alaska through August, launching our first endeavor into expedition cruising. This cruise marked our return to Alaska after a 20-year hiatus from the region. Mr. V and I were hosted aboard Windstar Cruises as guests, though did pay some costs as part of our experience. This post was published as part of our partnership agreement.

Sitka

We stocked up on our favorite Alaska salt (which I’ve included in the Alaska Box in the past), bought new books as souvenirs, and went inside St. Michael’s Russian Orthodox Cathedral. Then, while Mr. V caught up on work, I set out on a jet boat tour up the Stikine River; this was something I’d heard about during our last visit but we didn’t try. In this post, I promote travel to destinations that are the traditional lands of the Dena’ina Ełnena people and Lingít Aaní of the Tlingit people. With respect, I make a formal land acknowledgment, extending my appreciation and respect to the past and present people of these lands. To learn more about the peoples who call these lands home, I invite you to explore Native Land.
Final Thoughts on our Windstar Experience
Whilst not adult-only, the brand isn’t best suited to young families as there are no facilities to cater for children onboard. During Wednesday's announcement, Prelog said the addition of the two Mystic vessels would allow Windstar to send one of its sailing ships, the 148-passenger Wind Star, back to French Polynesia starting in 2027. Wind Star will join the 312-passenger Star Breeze in sailing year-round in French Polynesia, a major expansion for Windstar in the region.

The two ship additions represent a 30% capacity increase for Windstar, from 1,500 berths to 2,000 berths. Windstar's John Gunner, VP of expansion projects, is overseeing the conversions, and the interior design will be done by the line's in-house team. Our experience of the food on our recent Windstar voyage was superb, with delicious food wherever we ate.

Windstar currently operates six ships — the three former Seabourn vessels, all of which have been significantly renovated and lengthened over the years to have more cabins and venues, as well as three sailing ships. Windstar said each of the ships would have an Amphora dining room, a Windstar signature, and a more casual Star Grill. Each of the vessels will have a no-extra-charge specialty restaurant and offer 24-hour room service, too. Oceania’s scattered island nations bring to mind the breathtaking beaches and peacock-colored lagoons of Tahiti, but they also contain the most diverse indigenous cultures in the world. Come with us as we travel beyond the packaged resorts to experience a world few get to see. Go back to the way things used to be on tiny Niue or Maré, with no crowds, only twinkling stars at night, and a pace of life many yearn for.
Day 6: Juneau
Discover villages that still follow traditional ways of life on Tanna, Vanuatu. Explore small Fijian communities and the untouched rainforest of the Wasali Nature Reserve near Savusavu. Add context to the postcard images the South Pacific is known for. A journey through Latin America is a journey into the wondrous and the improbable.
The other, coming in December 2026, is World Explorer, the 2019-built first ship in the Mystic expedition series. Prelog on Wednesday did not say where the new Star Seeker and Star Explorer would sail. But he said itineraries and pricing for the first of vessels scheduled to debut, Star Seeker, would be announced in June.
It was a bit of a hurried visit, but we caught the bus back in time for a tasting and tipple at a brand new distillery – Uncharted Alaska – followed by dinner at a local restaurant that several people recommended, 108 Taphouse. There we had pints of Alaskan craft beer with burgers and a “traditional taco” on frybread. In conclusion, we thoroughly enjoyed our Windstar Cruise, and found it to be a unique experience. Small-ship Yacht cruising is definitely for us - perhaps you should give it a try. Windstar Cruises have partnered with the James Beard Foundation, a non-profit culinary arts organisation originating in New York.
Windstar Cruises have a very loyal fan-base, predominantly within the United States. However they are a less familiar product to the European cruise market, particularly here in the U.K. Windstar last expanded its fleet in 2014 and 2015, when it added three small motor vessels that were formerly operated by Seabourn.
